James Joyce, Ulysses, and the Law: Opening Event

  • UB Recht / UB Law 74 Rämistrasse Zürich, ZH, 8001 Switzerland (map)

The life and works of the Irish modernist James Joyce are deeply entangled with the complex and, at times, conflicting legal frameworks of his time – from his difficulties to publish the short story collection Dubliners to the U.S. obscenity trials against his landmark novel Ulysses and his real-life struggles with copyright, marriage, and immigration laws.

This exhibition, marking the Zurich James Joyce Foundation’s 40th anniversary, will not only introduce visitors to the current state of research on Joyce’s relation to the law, but also give them the opportunity to enjoy an eighteen-part series of paintings by the Irish artist Aiden Hickey, inspired by the eighteen sections of Ulysses.
